RON Submission

Michigan Remote Online Notary Submission Requirements

What to prepare before mailing the Michigan electronic and remote notary request package.

Updated June 29, 20264 min read

Michigan does not issue a separate RON commission. Your active Michigan notary commission covers electronic and remote notarizations after you notify the Secretary of State, identify an approved system, and provide proof that you are onboarded with that platform.

This page is a practical submission checklist, not legal advice. Confirm current filing requirements with the Michigan Department of State before submitting.

Authorization overview

Michigan's RON authorization process has three main steps:

  1. Hold an active Michigan Notary Public commission.
  2. Choose an electronic or remote notarization platform from Michigan's approved vendor list.
  3. Mail the completed Electronic and Remote Notary Request for Change form with proof of vendor enrollment to the Michigan Department of State, Office of the Great Seal.

Once the Department of State processes the request, your notary record can reflect electronic or remote notary authorization. Wait until the state has processed the request before performing electronic or remote notarizations.

Choosing a vendor and getting proof

Michigan asks for the approved system you are onboarded with and proof of that onboarding. NotaryCentral can provide a RON provider certificate of contract for Michigan notaries without requiring you to pay for the platform first.

If you are using NotaryCentral, download the certificate here and include it with your mailed request package: NotaryCentral RON Provider Certificate.

Items not submitted for Michigan RON authorization

These items may matter for your general notary commission, your vendor account, or your own records, but they are not separate Michigan RON submission artifacts:

  • A copy of your existing notary commission.
  • A new or separate RON commission application.
  • A RON filing fee.
  • An electronic notary seal or digital certificate file.
  • A RON training certificate or exam certificate.
  • Credential analysis, KBA, or ID proofing reports.
  • A notarial journal or electronic register upload.
  • Errors and omissions insurance proof.
  • A separate RON-specific bond or oath.

If you are not already commissioned

Before you can notify Michigan that you will perform electronic or remote notarizations, you must first become a Michigan notary. The standard Michigan notary commission process is separate from RON notification and may include the notary application, the $10 application fee, and county-level bond and oath requirements.
